Tell your mom “I love you” with a DIY Quilled Mother’s Day Card!
Materials
quilling paper or 1/2 cm wide cut paper and 5” long
pencil or toothpick
card stock
craft glue
scissors
ruler
felt tip marker or sharpie
So this Mother’s Day project is “mathy” because I did it with my amazing 7th graders this week in math class. We learned about transformations and applied this new knowledge to our Mother’s Day cards. But you can make any design you’d like. Be creative!
STEP 1: Make Your Cartesian Plane
If you DO want to show off your math skills start with making a Cartesian plane (x and y-axis). Draw two perpendicular lines with a pencil and a ruler. If they are nice and straight go back over it with a sharpie.
I won’t go too much into the math, but you will want to decide which quadrant you are starting in and if you are reflecting across the y-axis, x-axis, or origin. In my example, I am starting in quadrant 1 and reflecting across the y-axis into quadrant 2.
STEP 2: Make Your Hearts
Fold the strip in half to make a v-shape. Using your pencil or toothpick, start rolling one side towards the center, all the way to the fold.
Next, roll the other side all the way to the center again and release it from the pencil or toothpick. Pinch the fold slightly and adjust the rolled scrolls to make sure they're even. And... that's it! A completed quilled heart! Could it be any easier!! You can play around with different length strips and various width strips too.
Make a second heart. You may want to make a few and choose two that are similar in size in shape.
Step 3: Glue Them Down
Create a small puddle of glue on a paper plate. Using folded paper or cardstock smooth your glue thin. This will help create a final piece with a clean finish.
Carefully dip your heart into the glue. you’ll want enough so that it covers the entire bottom, but not so much that you have messy globs on your heart.
Place your first heart on your Cartesian plane. Remember you are reflecting so the second heart should be like a mirror image to the first.
Step 4: Say Something Special
Use a thin sharpie or micron pen. On the inside start with “As I REFLECT upon all your hard work…” The rest is up to you. Reflection is considering something, which we may not have otherwise given much thought. It is consciously looking at and thinking about the world around us. If you need help coming up with something to say, think about a memorable time together and how it made you feel.
